Supporting Icelandair’s Winter Operations Through Independent Insight

Miles Aviation Consultancy was recently engaged by Icelandair to support its winter operations through a focused De/Anti-Icing Health Check at Keflavík International Airport. Operating in one of the most challenging winter environments in Europe, Icelandair places a strong emphasis on safety, resilience, and operational readiness throughout the winter season.

The purpose of the engagement was to provide independent, expert insight into Icelandair’s de/anti-icing operation, offering an external perspective on how the operation is structured, governed, and delivered. Rather than a deep technical audit, the review was designed as a practical health check, helping management understand how existing processes, practices, and controls align with recognised industry standards and evolving expectations.

The scope of work covered the full de/anti-icing ecosystem, including procedures, training frameworks, equipment and infrastructure, operational coordination, and quality oversight. This was supported by a combination of desktop review and on-site engagement, allowing for informed discussions with key stakeholders across the operation. The approach enabled a clear, structured view of how the operation functions as a whole, rather than in isolated components.

Adding value to client operations

Engagements such as this are about adding value through perspective. By bringing experience from across global airline and ground handling operations, Miles Aviation Consultancy helps organisations step back from day-to-day pressures and view their operations through a broader, industry-informed lens. The result is a clearer understanding of where strengths lie, where risks may exist, and where future focus could deliver the greatest benefit.

We are proud to have supported Icelandair on this project and to continue working with operators who recognise the value of independent insight in strengthening operational performance and resilience.

Why Aircraft De-Icing Training Matters in Winter Operations

Aircraft de-icing and anti-icing are essential aviation safety procedures. Ice and snow accumulation can significantly affect an aircraft’s aerodynamics and performance, creating serious risks during take-off. Properly trained ground handling teams help to:

  • Prevent ice-related safety hazards through correct use of de/anti-icing fluids.

  • Maintain operational efficiency by reducing delays during adverse weather.

  • Ensure conformance and compliance with IATA, SAE International and international best practice.
